Congressional District 13 Candidate Comparison

Emilia Sykes

Rep. Sykes is a two-term Congresswoman from Akron, Ohio. She has secured more than $700 million in federal funding for her district, and over $16 million has gone directly to constituents. She has also advanced bipartisan legislation like the Lower Your Taxes Act and the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act.

Carey Coleman

Coleman is a former talk radio host and Cleveland television weatherman. He has no prior elected or government experience. Right now, he is his largest donor, accounting for 64% of his cash on hand. He made jokes about violence against Democratic members of Congress4 and has downplayed the January 6th insurrection.

AFFORDABILITY

Emilia Sykes

Sykes is a champion for affordability at every level. She introduced legislation that would expand the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit to put more money in working families’ pockets. She has also introduced legislation that would make housing more affordable by cracking down on corporate investors buying up single-family homes.

Carey Coleman

The clearest test of Coleman’s stance on affordability comes with his support for Trump’s federal budget, which opposed ACA tax credits that would help tens of thousands of people in his district afford their insurance.

EDUCATION

Emilia Sykes

As minority House leader, Sykes made education a top priority, pushing for a plan that would fully and fairly fund schools in Ohio. She also pushed for educational resources like wraparound social services at Ohio Schools and raising the starting salary for Ohio teachers.

Carey Coleman

Coleman is endorsed by organizations aligned with aggressive expansion of vouchers and charter schools that steal money from already underfunded public schools. He has also built his campaign on attacking public schools and teachers. During his campaign launch event, he said he wanted “to make damn sure if I have any ability in Congress to enact policy to tell these, for one, national teachers unions to go to hell4”

HEALTHCARE

Emilia Sykes

Sykes voted against Trump’s federal budget and led the bipartisan charge on saving the ACA tax credits that help keep healthcare costs low for working families. She has introduced legislation to put more money back in working families’ pockets by expanding key tax credits.

Carey Coleman

Coleman has fully embraced Trump’s federal budget and attacked Rep. Sykes for voting against it–the bill that is projected to rip $63 million in federal funding away from the district’s hospitals.
